Liversedge draw a blank in set-backs

The Clayborners suffered back-to-back away defeats on Saturday and Tuesday, during which they failed to get on the scoresheet.

Liversedge had beaten Barton Town Old Boys when the sides met at Clayborn earlier in the season and went into last Saturday’s game hoping to repeat the performance.

However, Dave Thompson’s men proved no match for the home side, who ran out convincing 5-0 winners.

Sedge fell behind to a Scott Phillips goal after just two minutes, with Ryan Cooper doubling Barton’s advantage shortly after.

It remained 2-0 at half-time but any hopes Liversedge had of getting back into the game were dashed six minutes after the break when Gareth Barlow added a third for Barton.

Ashley Lattimore made it 4-0 after 64 minutes and Barlow’s second completed the scoring, to maintain his side’s promotion challenge.

Second placed Barton now trail leaders Tadcaster Albion by six points but with four games in hand.

Liversedge hoped to bounce back when they travelled to Glasshoughton Welfare on Tuesday but they again drew a blank and suffered a 2-0 defeat.

Sedge had the vast majority of possession but were unable to create any clear cut scoring chances.

Welfare took a 10th minute lead when they broke from halfway and the player ran unchallenged before crossing for Del Pollock to score.

Brook Newton had a tame shot comfortably saved, while there were some encouraging displays by the visitors, not least from 16-year-old Declan Dawson, who worked hard.

Matty Thompson had an effort saved after the break, while Liversedge had strong claims for a penalty turned down.

Tom Jackson headed a corner goalwards and as the ball bounced around the area, a defender’s hand appeared to prevent the ball from going in.

The referee judged it was the goalkeeper who had saved the effort and waved away penalty claims.

Welfare went on to secure all three points when Mark Newton scored 10 minutes from full-time.
