Liversedge crash out of League Cup

Sedge took a 2-0 lead early on and Dave Thompson and James Riordan appeared to be on course for a first win since taking charge of first team affairs.

However, Dronfield fought back with a goal either side of half-time to level and send the tie into extra time.

Dominic Riordan put the home side ahead with an eighth minute goal and Gibril Bojang doubled the advantage just two minutes later with his fourth strike in six outings as the Clayborners dominated early on.

Dronfield, who lie 16th in Division One, pulled a goal back after 34 minutes through Daniel Wood and it remained 2-1 at half-time.

A Ryan Haigh own goal saw Dronfield back on level terms eight minutes after the interval and with no further goals, in normal time, the tie went to an extra 30 minutes.

The game opened up and a further four goals were scored.

Wood broke the deadlock five minutes into the first period but Sedge hit back two minutes into the second period when Bojang slotted home his second from the penalty spot.

Wood completed his hat-trick five minutes from the end to put Dronfield 4-3 up and with Liversedge pressing for an equaliser, the visitors broke and sealed victory with a last minute goal from Callum Mawbey to send Sedge crashing out.

Liversedge suffered a 10th league defeat of the season last Saturday when they suffered a 1-0 reversal at home to Basford Town.

Jack Davis scored the only goal of the game after 14 minutes and defeat leaves Sedge 17th in the table ahead of a crucial week which will see them play two teams below them in the Premier Division.

They travel to second-bottom Lincoln Moorlands Railway tomorrow when Thompson and Riordan will seek a first win in charge.

Lincoln have won just two of their 21 games so far and have already conceded a staggering 95 league goals this time, 39 of which have come in their last five matches, including a 10-0 hammering at Bridlington Town in October.

Sedge won 4-3 when the sides met at Clayborn in August thanks to two goals apiece from Adam Jarrett and Bojang.

Sedge travel to Staveley Miners Welfare next Wednesday and will look to go into that game on the back of a confidence boosting win at Lincoln.
