Joy as Hanging Heaton clinch Priestley Shield

Heaton had too much experience for a brave but youthful looking St Lawrence outfit with Steve Bourne producing a match winning display for the Bennett Lane men.

Bourne had a successful spell with Hanging Heaton’s first team in the late 1990s and has returned to the club to lead the second team’s challenge for honours.

He followed up a splendid century in the league the previous week, with the final’s top score of 64 as he claimed the man-of-the-match award.

Bourne also produced a magnificent, diving one handed catch to dismiss Chris Sharkey for six off the bowling of Mick Horner (1-20) during the Lawrence innings.

Despite two interruptions for rain, the Heaton bowlers stuck to their task and Lawrence were dismissed for 163 with Adeel Hafeez and spinner Umar Rehman picking up three wickets apiece.

Jordan Moore (45) and Harry Cullingford (34) were the leading Lawrence scorers, with Imran Dawood picking up 2-20 and Jamie Baulk claiming the other wicket.

Heaton lost the early wickets of openers Dawood and Oliver Newton before Bourne and Waz Nazir (30) shared a 67-run stand for the third wicket before the latter was trapped lbw byArchie Scott .

Bourne fell soon after for 64, having hit 12 fours, getting a bottom edge which cannoned onto his stumps off the bowling of Scott (2-41).

Captain Mark Inwood (20) calmed any nerves, sharing a 51-run stand with Nabeel Hafeez before being trapped lbw by Robert Thornton and it was left to Nabeel (30no) and brother Adeel Hafeez (3no) to complete Heaton’s win.
