Hopton Mills eye trophy glory

HOPTON Mills get a rare chance to mix it with the big boys on Sunday after qualifying for the Central Yorkshire League Twenty20 finals day at New Farnley.

Mills may have slipped in through the back door, topping their group after Wrenthorpe withdrew, but they will be excited about the prospect of locking horns with another of the Premier Division high fliers, T20 cup holders New Farnley, in the first semi-final, which starts at 10.30am.

The second semi is between Methley and Northowram Fields, with the final to follow later on Sunday afternoon.

Hopton will start as big underdogs and would have to beat two Premier sides to win the competition but Sunday will give captain Richard Myers and his side a taste of what it would be like competing at the higher level.

The winners of Sunday’s finals day will also go forward to represent the CYL at the Yorkshire and Humber Twenty20 finals, which will be held at Oulton.

Hopton currently lie fourth in Division One ahead of an important game at home to East Leeds tomorrow (1pm).

There is also a cracking clash in prospect at Memorial Park, when the top-two sides go head to head.

Moorlands lead the way with 42 points as the season reaches halfway tomorrow but they are just two in front of Ossett, who are very much in the mix to make a return to the top flight.

Ossett were involved in the only first division match to start last weekend as they were restricted to 150-9 before claiming two Oulton wickets in reply when the game was abandoned.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers are seventh in the Premier Division ahead of tomorrow’s game at home to second placed New Farnley, while Mirfield also face a tough game in Division Two at home to leaders East Ardsley A.

The Heavy Woollen Cup semi-finals take place on Sunday (1pm) when Hanging Heaton entertain CYL Premier Division leaders Wrenthorpe in a repeat of the 2010 final, while holders Shepley are at home to Townville.

Heaton welcome unbeaten Bradford League Division One leaders Woodlands to Bennett Lane tomorrow.
