Home town civic reception for sports stars

The talented quartet of swimmer Kyle Chisholm, boxer Amaar Akbar, Yorkshire cricket captain Andrew Gale, and international rugby star Sam Burgess were honoured by their home town.

Club commitments meant Gale was unable to attend in person, while Burgess recently returned to Australia, having rejoined NRL side South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Coun Kane said: “These successful athletes do a huge amount to increase the profile of Dewsbury and are positive role models for the town, its people, and especially our young people.

“When you look at the success they have achieved as young athletes, it is impossible not to be impressed by their talent and their commitment but also their personalities and their dedication to succeed.

“I want to say a personal thanks to them on behalf of all the people in Dewsbury and wider Kirklees, but at the same time I will be asking them to shout about where they are from, the opportunities they have had and have taken, and to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”

He added: “Two of the chosen recipients, Amaar and Kyle, are at the beginning of their careers. The others need no introduction, Sam was voted the best rugby player in the world and Andrew Gale has lifted the County Championship trophy with Yorkshire.

“Through hard work people can strive to become heroes and build strong characters to take on the world.”
