Hammer thrower Sarah sets sights on World Championships

SARAH Holt of Cleckheaton brought down the curtain on her season in star-studded style by rubbing shoulders with Great Britain stars Dai Greene and Jenny Meadows at the UK Athletics awards dinner in Loughborough.

Hammer thrower Sarah was a guest at the season finale dinner as part of the UKA Heroes initiative, sponsored by Original Source, where she received a cheque of £500 from Meadows.

Sarah, 23, has endured a topsy-turvy season. She was selected to compete in the Commonwealth Games and the European Team Championships but injury and illness ensured she failed to do herself justice.

However, after sharing supper with the likes of Commonwealth and European 400m hurdles champion Greene, Sarah believes she has all the ingredients she needs to do the GB vest proud at next year’s World Championships.

“The awards night is good fun and it’s nice to see all the different athletes and the big names,” she said. “I am getting more used to seeing the GB stars because I have been on teams with them now but it is still a really good night.

“Last year was a big disappointment for me because I had a few different injury problems and it was really frustrating. I am still trying to get back to full fitness which is frustrating but it is going well and I am feeling confident about next year.

“Most important to me is to stay fit for next season and then try and get myself to the World Championships in South Korea.”

World 800m bronze medallist Meadows – who added European Championships bronze to her rapidly growing trophy cabinet in 2010 – believes Holt will be a revelation next year.

“All the guys on the scheme seem to be massively improving each year now and I am sure they will have a great year in 2011,” said Meadows, an ambassador for the UKA Heroes initiative.

“Since I have been involved on the scheme everyone seems to be really doing better each year and they have such a great attitude. They are all very much into setting their own goals and are much more in tune with what they need to be doing than I was at their age and they are all amazing.”

UKA Heroes project sponsored by Original Source is a successful initiative which offers financial support to talented young athletes who are working towards the 2012 and 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
