Green double is in vain as Trojans lose

Thornhill Trojans were left contemplating what might of been as they slipped to a second defeat in National Conference Division Two last Saturday.

It was a below par performance from Thornhill and they had several chances to stake a claim on the league points before going down 38-26.

The Trojans appeared to be uninterested in the first half before a rousing half-time lecture from coach James Ratcliffe brought some purpose into Thornhill’s game.

A try on 72 minutes from Liam Green presented Thornhill with opportunity to level but despite both touch judges raising their flags to signify goal, the referee thought otherwise and the conversion was waved away and Askam kicked on to secure the victory.

The Cumbrian visitors set out their stall from the off and in the game’s opening phase were scoring almost a point per minute.

Askam full-back Russ Bolton shrugged off a defender and powered over for the opening try. Sam Dowsett converted.

A good interchange of passes saw Askam move up field and Tom Wilkinson went over for a try which Dowsett goaled.

Thornhill began to show signs of a recovery and man of the match Liam Morley was one of the few reasons for the Thornhill supporters to be cheerful in this defeat.

The introduction of substitute Anthony Harris also lifted Thornhill and his strong drive took them forward before Morley’s lovely inside pass found Jake Wilson to score an unconverted try.

A high tackle on Rob Kelly resulted in a penalty. George Stott took play forward and got the ball out to Mindaugas Bendikas, who crossed for a try in the corner and Andrew Bates converted.

A kick to the corner saw a feeble attempt from Thornhill to pick the ball up and after Askam were held short, Tom Butler crossed from acting half-back.

Further sloppy play from Thornhill allowed Askam to score again as Ben Lewrey went on a storming solo run to brush by three would be defenders. Dowsett converted.

Within moments of the restart Gareth Love forced his way over for a try which Andrew Bates converted.

Good work by Jake Ratcliffe took the Trojans forward and Liam Green ploughed over for a try which Bates converted to level.

Askam replied with a Tom Butler try which Dowsett converted but Thornhill again responded as Green scooted over from close range. Agonisingly for Thornhill the conversion was missed which denied them the opportunity to level, despite both touch judges seemingly awarding the goal.

Sam Ratcliffe looked to be racing away for a try but the referee blew for a forward pass and Askam scored two late tries to seal victory.

Ben Lewrey grabbed the first and Dowsett converted before the final act saw Tom Askew catch a kick virtually on his own try line and ran the length of the field to score an unconverted try.
