Golfing duo still going strong at 95

DEWSBURY District Golf Club can boast two of the oldest swingers in town in Arthur Crawshaw and Arthur Briggs.

Despite being 95 years old, Mr Crawshaw, who lives in Cleckheaton, still plays golf three times a week alongside good friend Arthur Briggs, who turns 95 next week.

The duo have almost a century of golfing experience between them yet still regurlarly turn out in local competitions.

The pair usually go round the tough, hilly course on buggies although they walk in bad weather.

Last week Mr Crawshaw completed a full round, despite mist, fog and a biting cold wind, to earn 36 stableford points.

Mr Crawshaw has been a member at Dewsbury for more than 44 years, while Mr Briggs, from Mirfield, joined 55 years ago.

Dewsbury District is renowned for the testing terrain of the course but even those who know Mr Crawshaw were surprised by his commitment and endurance last week, although not his strength of character.

Club administrator Mavis Dixon added: “We all think they are absolutely fabulous. They rarely miss a round and they are two fantastic characters.”
