Young golfer qualifies for World Junior Championships

A YOUNG golfer from Birstall has qualified for the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships, in San Diego, next year.

Tom North, 14, will take on the world’s best young players in California, next July, after a superb victory in the British Junior Golf Tour, at Forest Pines, last Saturday.

North, who plays at Howley Hall Golf Club, birdied the par-five 17th to edge the field by one shot and claim his second tour victory of the year.

It is a fitting way to end a terrific year in which North celebrated a second place finish in the Moortown Junior Masters and shot a brilliant gross score of 77 ay the York Golf Club Junior Open.

However, the Batley Grammar School student is already accustomed to success since, at the tender age of eight, becoming the youngest ever Lightcliffe Golf Club member to attain a men’s playing handicap of 28.

North moved to Howley Hall a year later and has gone on to represent Yorkshire and Leeds and District.

At the age of 12, North added the Crossland Heath Junior Open and Howley Hall Junior Knockout to his list of honours and went on to help his three-man team to victory in the champion of champions Ken Romaine Trophy.
