Sedge edged out after giving Vase hosts a huge fright

Shildon 3

Liversedge 2

LIVERSEDGE produced a brave fightback and gave the hosts a huge fright but it wasn’t enough to produce an FA Vase upset.

Some players were unable to make the trip but those who made up the numbers acquitted themselves well and Sedge were a little unlucky not to force a late equaliser. Shildon have a reputation of being a very good footballing side but they were pushed all the way and it was Liversedge who created the first chance when Matthew Bugg fed Gibril Bojang but he fired wide.

Jarad Peltier sent a ball through to Tate Williams and he in turn fed Bugg, who drilled his shot into the side netting when many in the ground thought it had gone in.

Shildon took a 32nd minute lead when Sedge failed to clear properly and Ben Christiensen produced a great strike which flew into the net.

Paul Hargreen made a couple of good saves before Shildon doubled their lead when Sam Garvie turned on the edge of the area and scuffed a shot beyond the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.

Williams had an early second half effort saved before Shildon looked to have put the game out of reach when Garvie curled a superb shot into the top corner to make it 3-0.

However, Sedge refused to lie down and Bugg shout just over before Shildon failed to clear and James Rothell rifled home to give them hope.

Bugg and Rothell again went close before more good build up play released Williams down the right. His cross caused confusion and Bugg forced the ball home.

Liversedge had seven minutes to force and equaliser but although they poured forward and created further chances, Shildon held on and the visitors’ hopes were dashed when Chris Hannay was sent off for a second booking.

Liversedge: Hargreen, Hewitt, Rothell, Peltier, Hannay, Riordan, Williams, Cooper, Bugg, Bojang (Sharp 78), Thompson (Rogerson 64). Sub (not used): Webster.
