Redfearn encouraged by Ngoyi and Leeds United display

Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn believes there were signs of improvement from his team as they pushed promotion chasing Norwich City at Elland Road last night.

While Norwich edged it in the end with a 57th minute goal from former United favourite Jonny Howson and an injury-time strike by Graham Dorrans they did not find it as easy to go away with three points from Elland Road as Cardiff had a few days earlier.

The good thing from our point of view was that the performance was a lot better than Saturday,” said Redfearn.

“For long spells, we matched them. The difference is, and the reason why they’re second and we’re mid-table, is at the business end of the pitch.

“We came up against a good side. I thought we made them look average.

“They stepped it up in the second half and we could have perhaps done more when we broke on them.

“I thought we played well in spells. We just haven’t got that edge.”

Redfearn was happy with debutant Granddi Ngoyi, who played in a defensive midfield role in his first start since arriving on loan in January.

He added; “I thought he played well. He broke stuff up and gave us some presence.

“It made it better for Murphy and Mo in there because they had the assurance of a sitting midfield player. That’s his role.

“I think we’ve missed Lewis Cook, but we looked better for having somebody who had that capability to defend in there.

“I thought the midfield did well. I thought Ngoyi looked the part. He picked Hoolahan up and Hoolahan wasn’t in it much in the first half.”
