It was hardly a thriller as the goalless final score suggested, but United looked solid and were rarely threatened by opponents expected to challenge for honours in the Skybet Championship.

The Whites’ only real scare was in the 81st minute when Leicester substitute Chris Wood cut in from the right to the edge of the box and let fly with a low shot that beat Leeds keeper Paddy Kenny only to rebound to safety off the post.

Leeds failed to manage an effort on target, although they went close to a late winner when sub Matt Smith saw a header hit the side netting from a Stephen Warnock cross.

Another sub, Dominic Poleon, should have been awarded a penalty after referee Keith Stroud failed to spot he had his shirt pulled by Zak Whitbread while Ross McCormack hit an attempted lob wide when well placed in the area. But in truth chances were few and far between for Brian McDermott’s men.

Leicester’s main threat was long throws by Liam Moore until they abandoned their 3-5-2 tactics to look livelier in the final half-hour. They never forced Kenny into any serious saves, however, with Jamie Vardy clipping one shot over and more efforts wide by Danny Drinkwater and David Nugent.

The first half was a dour affair with only one shot on target and that bringing the easiest of saves for Kenny from a back header by Wes Morgan.

The returning Rudy Austin had two long range efforts blocked for Leeds and they had the one real chance of the half when Jason Pearce headed over when well placed in the box.

United showed plenty of endeavor and did well to prevent the hosts from playing, but lacked creativity after getting in some decent positions.
