The controversial player came to the club with a reputation for being involved in trouble, but had behaved impeccably all season until sent-off for running towards the away supporters at Elland Road and making a gesture towards them after scoring a second half penalty.

United manager Brian McDermott backed referee Graham Scott’s decision and commented on Saturday that he could not understand why his player had done it, but after speaking to Diouf since the incident he said the player was still fully committed to the cause.

He added: “I’ve spoken to El-Hadji Diouf and he has apologised regarding the sending off on Saturday.

“He has accepted the sending off and the club have fined him two weeks wages which is the maximum we can do.

“I’ve had a good conversation with Dioufy regarding the future, he is fully committed for what is to come next season.”
