Fisher nets four trophies

St John Fisher School made Spen Valley Schools Football Association history as they competed in six of the eight finals at Batley Free Grammar School last Saturday.

Fisher won four trophies and their head of PE Andy Graham said: “We are very proud of all the pupils’ achievements in reaching the finals in so many year groups. This success is a reflection of their hard work and commitment.”

The day proved to a huge success for Spen Valley Schools FA with more than 240 pupils from around the district taking part and over 400 friends and families watching the games.

All the finals were contested well and the Under-16 final between St John Fisher and Earlsheaton Technology College saw Fisher hold their nerve to win 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

The Denis Ward Memorial Trophy for Under-11s was an all Mirfield affair between Crossley Fields J&I School and Crowlees J&I School. The game flowed from end to end with good football as Crossley Fields ran out the winners 3-2.

The Under-12 final saw another excellent game with Mirfield Free Grammar taking a first-minute lead against St John Fisher. Both teams were equally matched for long periods but in the end Fisher proved too strong as Jacob Thewlis scored a hat-trick and Callum Pearson was MoM in a 3-1 victory.

The Under-13 final was between Birkenshaw Middle School and St John Fisher and spectators were entertained by a high scoring game of quality football. Birkenshaw’s Jack Carney was MoM and dominated the midfield as Birkenshaw won 6-4.

The Under-14 final saw St John Fisher beat Westborough by 10-1.

In the Under-15 final, St John Fisher and Whitcliffe Mount Enterprise College had met previously with Fisher winning so the Whitcliffe boys were determined, they dominated and ran out 4-1 winners.

The girls’ finals also provided entertaining football. In the Under-13 match Earlsheaton Technology College and Mirfield Free Grammar School competed for the Reporter Series Trophy. Mirfield ran out easy winners over an under- strength Earlsheaton side.

The Under-16 final between Mirfield Free Grammar School and St John Fisher was a much closer game. Fisher took an early 2-0 lead, before Mirfield pulled one back. For most of the second half both teams battled for dominance but with 10 minutes to go Grace Farrar curled a free-kick into the top corner to give Fisher the win.

Bernie Preece, president of the Spen Valley Schools FA said: “The success of the morning is due to a lot of people working as a team. The school staff, students and parents, the referees, the parents’ committee, the team managers and the staff, headteacher and governors of Batley Free Grammar School.”
