Fisher aim to shock Rooneys

Fisher disposed of fellow Merseysiders Oak Tree Pub, from Huyton, 3-0 in the first round and will now aim to dump the 2011 winners out of the competition in a match that will take place at Heswall FC on the Wirral.

Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney’s family are heavily connected with the Martyrs as his uncle Richie has coached the side in two spells, while his two brothers played when they won the competition.

This has not gone unnoticed by two Man U supporters with Fisher connections.

Goalkeeper Michael Smith played a key role when Fisher won the Heavy Woollen Sunday League Premier Division title last season. Although he has dropped into the Reserve side this term, he has been named on the bench for Sunday’s tie.

Gary Shaw will be among a group of Fisher supporters travelling to the game by coach and he has vowed to take a ball to the game for Rooney to sign, should the star be there to cheer on the Martyrs.

Fisher’s cup run has created a good deal of interest since their first round success over Oak Tree, when Rob Bordman produced a sensational display to bag a hat-trick, and a coach to the game has sold out.

Martyrs play in green and white hoops, the same as Fisher’s preferred kit, but it is understood that the home side have agreed to play in their change kit of black and white.

Oyster Martyrs may have the Rooney family backing them, but Fisher have their own family connection with the Riordans been heavily involved for a number of years.

Dominic Riordan returned from injury last week and will be eager to be involved in this mouthwatering tie, while brothers James and Andrew are also set to play.

Paul Riordan, the uncle of the trio, is also manager of the team, who will be aiming to cause an upset this Sunday, to follow on from last week’s success in the Brook Butler Cup.
