MATTHEW Wilby collected a gold and a bronze medal from the recent British Gas ASA North East Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Matthew, from Mirfield, won gold in the 10 years age group at the 100 metres backstroke over the weekend of June 2 and 3.

The following week he returned to Sheffield and took bronze in the 200 metre breaststroke.

Matthew, who attends Crowlees School and swims for Borough of Kirklees, also recorded top 10 finishes in the 100m and 200m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

He has qualified to swim in eight events for the short course (25m) regional competition to be held in Sunderland in December.

nCleckheaton Lawn Tennis Club’s Mens A-team has extended its incredible winning run to 20 matches in the Huddersfield and District Tennis League.

Having been relegated to Division Three in August 2010, the team won all 14 matches last year, to clinch the title.

They have begun the current season in similar fashion, winning all six matches - a run club chairman Robert Clayton hopes they can maintain until the end of the season as the aim to seal back to back promotions.

Cleckheaton LTC are holding an open day on Sunday July 1, between 11am until 2pm. Potential players will have the chance to visit the club, play tennis for free and chat to members and coaches.

Anyone who signs up for membership on the day or during the following week will receive a 50 per cent discount on their 2012 subscription.
