Dewsbury Rams overcome Hunslet Hawks in tense derby

DEWSBURY Rams fought out a 16-8 derby defeat over Hunslet Hawks in a tense Co-operative Championship clash at Tetley's Stadium on Sunday.

Awful conditions meant it was never going to be a free flowing game as both sides made handling errors.

It took 16 minutes for the first points to be scored as Hawks stand-off Joe McLocklan landed a peanlty.

Dewsbury hit back when James Craven latched onto Patch Walker's deflected kick through to score and Walker added the conversion.

However, Hunslet moved swiftly to the other end and John Oakes dived in at the left corner, with McLocklan adding a superb touchline goal to put the visitors 8-6 ahead at half-time.

Dewsbury improved after the break and the game hinged on two tries in the space of five minutes midway through the second half.

Craven gathered Walker's deft chip over the top for his second goal and Walker added the simple conversion.

Then a lovely sweping move stretched the Hawks defence and Rams winger Austin Buchanan dived in at the left corner for the match clinching try.
