Darren wins Yorkshire Cycle Speedway title

HECKMONDWIKE Cycle Speedway Club rider-manager Darren Kent won the Yorkshire Individual Senior Championships at his home track at Firth Park last Saturday.

Darren took on a good field and scored a maximum 20 points to win the title ahead of former Halifax rider Fred Rothwell (18 points) and Aidy Owen (Sheffield) who was third on 17.

Heckmondwike youngster Martin Booker scored 12 points and Andy Morris 10, with the former collecting the award for third place in the newcomer category.

Booker made a fantastic first competitive appearance after only four training sessions and won awards in the Under-13 and Under-10 events.

Former Yorkshire League chairman Jeff Layden presented the awards on behalf of sponsors Browns Solicitors of Sheffield.

Sunday’s final match of the season saw Heckmondwike lose 81-58 at Stockport. Darren Kent scored 17 points and Andy Morris seven.

Due to a shortage of riders the Heckmondwike club’s 39th season has been a difficult one but credit must be given to Darren, Andy and Richard Westcott who ensured that every official fixture was fulfilled.
