Cuckoos stay top after six-time champions suffer defeat

THE Cuckoos remain top of the Dewsbury Table Tennis League after a convincing 8-2 win over Battyeford.

New signing Dave Heppenstall was man-of-the-match for the Cuckoos, winning all his three games and only dropping one set.

Heppenstall is in great form at the moment and was well supported by teammates Adrian Worth and another new signing Rob Connell who both won two games each.

John Flynn was in decent form for Battyeford, despite their bad defeat, as he won two of his three games.

Flynn’s four-set win over Worth was the best game of the night.

Flynn won the first two sets 13-11, 11-9 but Worth then won the third 11-4, only for Flynn to take a tight fourth set 11-9. The Cuckoos are now three points clear at the top of the league.

Aardvarks B moved up to second place after a shock 6-4 victory against six-time champions the Simpsons.

Ian Fothergill, Garry Crossley and Xiaofei Dyson were all in fine form winning two games each for the Aardvarks.

Darren Page was the only good point of the night for the Simpsons winning his three games, in their first defeat of the season.

The game of the match was Fothergill’s five-set win over the unlucky Ian Teale.

Fothergill took a 2-1 lead, winning the first and third sets 11-7, but Teale made it all square at 2-2, winning the fourth set 11-9.

Fothergill made no mistake in the fifth set winning 11-8 in a hard fought victory.

Aardvarks A were unable to match the B team’s fortunes, as they were held to a 5-5 draw against the Colts A.

Lewis Williamson and Joshua Lane were the star performers for the Colts, as they won two games each, and Chris Reece also won a game.

Steve Shaw was in good form for the Aardvarks, he won all his three games.

He was involved in the match of the night, when he overcame the unlucky junior player Lane 12-10 in the final set. Lane responded in some style to beat Fothergill 11-3 in the final set to earn his side a draw.

The two teams representing Dewsbury in the National Cadet League played extremely well at the Dearne Valley Centre in Rotherham.

The A team, consisting of Josh Lane, Freddie Osenton-Brown and Shayan Sirat, had a hard task playing against the three top junior teams in Yorkshire.

They lost 5-4 to Keighley but hit back with wins over Sheffield (6-3) and Rotherham (7-2).

Lane had a particularly good day winning eight of his nine games. He was supported by Osenton-Brown (six wins) and Sirat (five).

The B team, having been promoted to the third division, gave a superb display with wins against St Marys Sheffield (6-3), Ilkley (6-3) and an emphatic 9-0 success over Haworth.

Sam Gatenby gave a fine captain’s performance with eight wins out of nine, and was supported by Kevin Dyson (seven wins) and Jack Dyson (six).
