Cricket: Heald takes over as CYL chairman

MARK Heald has taken over as chairman of the Central Yorkshire League (CYL) after David Sharp stood down last week.

Mr Sharp e-mailed his resignation to league officials who unanimously agreed that Mr Heald would be his successor.

He has played nearly all his career in the CYL, starting in the 1970s and has had spells at Scholes (twice) and Ossett plus three at his home club East Ardsley, who he will continue to captain this season.

Mark said: “I am honoured to have been asked to take on the position of chairman having first played in the league as a schoolboy.

“I am lucky to be surrounded by a strong group of volunteers who form the management committee and several sub-committees, which contains some of the leading cricketing people from our league.

“I have asked some of the older members and nobody can remember a league chairman who was still playing but I am hoping that will help me understand issues players may have.”

“As always we will strive to meet the challenges put before us and while doing so encourage all our members to enjoy the game itself – the real reason why we are all involved.”

Mark realises cricket is facing threats from other sports, as football and rugby league encroach into the summer, and the fact that many local schools no longer include cricket as part of the curriculum.

However, he is determined that the CYL will continue to provide cricket for all, from the elite clubs down to those sides who enjoy the more social standard of cricket.

Mr Sharp has also stepped down as president of the Heavy Woollen Cup competition and a meeting on March 15, will elect a new president.
