Cooper’s stunner seals Sedge win

Selby Town 1

LIVERSEDGE left it late but Danny Cooper came up with a goal worthy of winning any game at Selby on Monday.

Sedge created by far the better chances against a Selby side who are rooted to the foot of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division table but found teenage goalkeeper Danny Greaves in terrific form.

The former Sheffield Wednesday academy product looked like earning his side a valuable point until Cooper’s injury-time wonder strike.

Liversedge started well and James Wasley broke down the right and cut inside before shooting over the crossbar, Dave Bordman then raced through but his effort was saved by Greaves, while James Hurtley’s follow-up shot was blocked on the goalline.

Carl Horsman pulled up injured after just 10 minutes and he was replaced by Joe Jagger.

Soon after another good move down the right saw Wasley cross and Jagger stepped over the ball for Alex Hallam to shoot but again Greaves was up to the test.

Liversedge finally broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when Hallam’s goalbound effort was scrambled away but Bordman was on hand to fire home.

Another good run and shot was tipped away for a corner by Selby man-of-the-match Greaves and before half-time the home side equalised.

Matt Friend made a good run and drew Sedge goalkeeper James Waggett before calmly slotting home to send Town into the break level at 1-1.

Liversedge suffered another blow early in the second half when Andy Markham limped off injured and with Nathan Cartman unwell on the bench, substitute goalkeeper Danny Knight was sent on as an outfield player.

Liversedge were forced to reshuffle things and Selby almost took advantage when Waggett could only parry a shot but redeemed himself by tipping the rebound away for a corner.

Darryl Leach headed wide from a good Cooper cross at the other end, while Bordman fired over and it appeared Liversedge would have to settle for a point.

However, in injury time, Cooper broke from halfway and unleashed a 35-yard shot with the outside of his right foot and it sailed over Greaves into the top corner to secure victory.

Liversedge: Waggett, Larkin, Horsman (Jagger 10), Markham (Knight 47), Leach, Hopkins, Cooper, Hurtley, Bordman, Wasley, Hallam. Sub (not used): Cartman.
