Cleckheaton name scoreboard after member

Mr Fenton was awarded the OBE in 1982 and received the accolade of High Sheriff of West Yorkshire the previous year.

Mr Fenton’s involvement with Cleckheaton dates back to the early 1950s and he played an instrumental role in building the current scorebox in 1954.

That building still remains, although Cleckheaton revealed a new electronic fascia around a year ago.

Cleckheaton spokesman Kevin Mitchell said: “A plaque has been fixed to the state-of-the-art scoreboard with no fuss, because Charles is an unassuming gentleman and the type of person that belongs in another era.

“He quietly goes about his business but beneath his quiet personality lies someone that is passionate about cricket and Cleckheaton CC.

“Although Charles is not in the peak of health these days, he always takes more than a passing interest in Cleckheaton and he has been a generous supporter over the years.”

Cleckheaton groundsman Keith Johnstone has also unearthed a newspaper article cutting from 1954, printed following the opening of their new scorebox.

The article says: “Without Mr Fenton’s energy, drive and enthusiasm, the present completed job would not have been there.”

Mr Mitchell added: “When you speak to members of Cleckheaton CC, there is always total respect for someone that is quite simply a true gentleman.”
