Charlie in England roller hockey squad

HIGH FLYER Charlie Oakes is set to fulfill a sporting dream when he represents England in a roller hockey tournament in Portugal later this year.

Charlie, 12, who attends West End Middle School in Cleckheaton, has been playing roller hockey with Spen Valley Flyers at Whitcliffe Mount, for more than three years and has been attending the England training camp since January. He has also been selected to represent Northern Counties for the last three years.

Now he has been selected by the England coaches to attend a tournament in Portugal with the England team.

His mum Pamela said: “I can’t tell you how proud we are of him, he’s come a long way in a short space of time.”

Charlie also plays football and cricket but it is in roller hockey where all his training and hard work has paid off.

During the school holidays Charlie and his parents are busy trying to raise the funds to allow him to travel with the England squad and due to his age he has to be accompanied by an adult, which doubles the costs.

He is currently cleaning cars to help raise funds but if there are any local firms who can help with some sponsorship they can contact Pamela Oakes on 01274 871063.
