Widnes worked their way upfield on the back of three successive penalties, resulting in Luke Wellings going over and Ryan Millington’s goal levelled matters.

Two minutes later, Niki Crabtree repeated his trick of the previous week and again intercepted and sprinted 60 metres to score under the posts and he also converted.

Celtic piled on the pressure and eventually broke through in the last minute of the half for loose forward Eddie Kilroy to score near the corner and they led 16-6 at half-time.

Two minutes into the second half Celtic went close when Danny Crabtree had a try disallowed for a knock-on at the corner.

They kept up the pressure and put in a crossfield kick which a Widnes player allowed to bounce and Mike Foulstone dived on the ball for his second try, converted by Niki Crabtree.

Midway through the half, Widnes pressure resulted in Richard Arnold scoring an unconverted try near the corner.

But there was to be no fight-back and Celtic made the game safe when Joe Waters sent Richard Tillotson in at the corner.
