Cartman double helps Liversedge to subdue Barton threat

Liversedge 4

Barton OB 1

LIVERSEDGE turned on the style on Tuesday night to overcome Barton in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

The first chance came after just three minutes when James Riordan sent Dave Bordman in on goal but goalkeeper Liam Taylor was quickly out to smother at his feet.

Barton’s Simon Spencer shot from the edge of the area but his effort was tipped over by Danny Knight.

The lively start continued and Liversedge took a seventh minute lead when Taylor mis-kicked a clearance straight to Nathan Cartman, who slotted it into an empty net.

Jake Lawler produced a fine swerving shot which Taylor had to be alert to gather before Knight acrobatically tipped over a shot from Barton’s Gareth Owen.

Liversedge doubled their lead after 24 minutes when Jerry White made a good run and sent over a cross, which Cartman converted.

A lovely move saw White link with Alex Hallam before the former made an overlapping run, collected the return pass and crossed for Cartman to convert but he was denied his hat-trick by an offside flag and it remained 2-0 at half-time.

Liversedge continued to attack at the start of the second half and they created a three-on-two overlap but Dave Bordman took the wrong option, which allowed Taylor to save at his feet.

Cartman chipped Taylor but just over the crossbar before Simon Wood sent Alex Ferguson on a run but his effort was saved.

Another fine move saw Wood, Cartman and substitute James Hurtley link but Taylor saved the latter’s shot well before a late flurry of goals.

Sedge sealed the points in the 88th minute when substitute Rob Bordman fired a free-kick which clipped a defender and sailed over Taylor to make it 3-0.

A minute later, Cartman fed Hurtley, who produced a teasing ball across the face of goal and Hallam raced in to finish.

The only blot on the Liversedge copybook came deep into stoppage time. The linesman flagged for a Liversedge throw but it was overruled by the referee and Barton took a quick throw-in, which released Scott Philips, he raced in and tucked home a consolation goal.

Liversedge: Knight, Hay, White, Wood, Riordan, Hopkins (Shuttleworth 75), Ferguson (R Bordman 80), Lawler, Cartman, D Bordman (Hurtley 75), Hallam. Subs (not used): Thompson, Cooper.
