Budding archers take aim at Dewsbury competition

The t.a.a.rget Archery Competition was held at Dewsbury Sports Centre in June.

Budding archers from 11 schools in Batley and Dewsbury were among those taking aim in the three-round contest as they targeted regional glory at the event on Saturday, June 29.

A total of 84 children took part in the event, with each child getting at least 15 shots at the target for their team.

The contest was split into three rounds, with the winner firing a total of 156 arrows over the entire day.

In the first round, each team had 60 arrows to fire over five turns, with the top ten teams going through and the bottom 11 eliminated from the competition.

The second round saw the teams take aim with 48 arrows over four turns, with the top five going through to the final.

The final round used 48 arrows over four turns, with the winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals decided by the highest score.

Huddersfield’s Moldgreen Primary School took the honours on the day as they beat their rivals to take gold.

Crow Lane School’s B team, also from Huddersfield, took silver, while Heckmondwike’s Holy Spirit won bronze.

The highest-placed Dewsbury school was St Paulinus, who came fourth, while only one Batley team, Field Lane A, made it into the second round and finished in tenth.

The competition was organised as a joint project with t.a.a.rget and Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL), and t.a.a.rget prepared all the teams by doing work in schools as after schools clubs.

KAL provided the Archery Club on Friday Nights and the venue for the competition.

T.a.a.rget, which was established in 2004, is a mobile sports business which aims to make archery accessible to more people.

They have recently expanded to include cricket and golf, and provide events and competitions in all three sports across the region on a regular basis.

They currently hold a schools archery league, which consists of four rounds spread out around the school year.

This year’s league has recently finished, with Dewsbury’s Overthorpe CofE School taking the honours with a final score of 846.
