Boys turn on style to seal fine victory

Batley Boys kept alive their hopes of a top two finish in the Pennine League Championship with a 48-12 victory over Allerton Bywater.

The win saw Batley move above their opponents into fourth spot, while they are just three points behind second placed New Earswick with two games in hand.

Batley made a fast start and scored their first try from the opening set.

Jayjay Price broke and passed the ball out to Ryan Crossley and he sent Josh Ricter over, with Mick Dyson converting.

Good work from forwards Sean Whittaker and Sean Sheard took Batley into a good field position and Adam Bingham broke through before sending Price steaming onto a pass to score, with Dyson again converting.

Good running from Nathan Lumb and Gavin Davis took Batley close to the line before Dan Winner nipped over from acting half-back for an unconverted try.

Alllerton replied, taking advantage of a break in Batley’s defence to score a converted try.

The Boys responded with good attacking runs from Rob Garforth and Aaron James before play switched out wide and Price grabbed his second.

Another lapse in Batley’s defence led to a second converted Allerton try.

Batley came back fighting to some more good line work led to Josh Whitehead powering over for a try, with Dyson’s conversion sending the Boys into half-time 26-12 ahead.

Batley showed their intent at the start of the second half and impressive work from the forwards took them upfield before Ryan Crossley and Winner linked on the touchline to put Paul Holloway over for his first try, converted by Dyson.

Batley never eased off and Crossley jinked through the defence to score next to the posts and give Dyson a simple goal.

Daniel Scales and Aaron James worked hard and Adam Bingham broke through and fed Rob Garforth.

He continued the move before slipping the ball back out to Bingham, who finished the move off with a try in the corner, converted by Dyson.

Allerton made good ground to get near the line only to drop the ball.

Bingham reacted quickly scooped it up, broke upfield and sent Crossley over for his second try of the match, with Dyson’s goal rounding off the scoring.

Man-of-the-match was Price followed by Davis and Nathan Lumb. Top Tackler was Davis followed by Aaron James and Sean Sheard.

Batley travel to St Josephs on Saturday looking to build on the win.
