Vanzie loses in ABA semis

CLECKHEATON Boxing Academy’s Ashley Vanzie lost his National Senior ABA semi-final bout in Newcastle last Saturday but the club still has youngster Sean Bube one step away from the Yorkshire Junior ABA finals.

In a busy week the club also showed off their most talented boxers at their dinner show at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford where they recorded eight victories out of the 13 bouts.

An out of sorts Vanzie, who had dominated fights in the earlier rounds to reach the last four, was beaten by Peter Bebbington of Macclesfield in the 81kg class at Newbiggin, Newcastle on Saturday night.

Cleckheaton head coach Keith Tate said his charge wasn’t his usual self in the ring.

The club still has a representative in the junior competition with Bube after he bounced back from defeat in the club show last Wednesday to overcome Mitchell Lyle of the Eastburn Club near Skipton in the Yorkshire semi-finals at Knottingley.

He will now go forward to the county finals which are to be arranged.

There were some outstanding performances in the ring at the Cedar Court event which were appreciated by knowledgeable crowd.

Callum Grace from the Cleckheaton club won the boxer of the night award for the terrific effort he put in as he overcame C Cooper of Hull.

In his first ever bout, Cleckheaton’s Kyle Groscutt was unlucky to lose to S Strong from Bredbury in Manchester.

Local lad Kabeer Khan earned a good win for Cleckheaton against M Anwar of the Unity ABC Sheffield.

Ishmail Khan beat A Kelly (Malthouse ABC Rotherham) on points.

In his first bout for the Cleckheaton club Oliver Robinson from Halifax put in a good performance against H Kersey of Harrogate.

Abdul Khan lost to H Iqbal of the Bradford Police Boxing Club.

There was also a win for Cleckheaton’s Nabeel Ahmed against A Najib of Unity Sheffield.

In the senior competitions Batley brothers Danny and Ben Hargreaves both earned wins.

Danny overcame N Ball of Bredbury and Ben came out on top against A Brearton of the Scots Grey Club from Nottingham.

Steven Stead of Cleckheaton lost to M Counsil of Bredbury while Numan Baig lost to K Dixon of the Bracebridge Club in Lincoln.

The final bout of the evening saw Cleckheaton’s Tom Pearson enter the ring for the second time in a week and he battled hard to earn the club’s eighth win with a points victory over A Milner of the Freedom Club.
