Vanzie bids to build on Yorks title

CLECKHEATON Boxing Academy’s Ashley Vanzie claimed the Yorkshire ABA title last weekend and this Sunday aims to win the regional title when he takes on the Midland champion in a match at Retford.

Vanzie won the Yorkshire light heavyweight title in the top-of-the-bill contest at Meanwood, Leeds. The Cleckheaton man,who earlier this season won the Universities title, earned a majority decision against Matthew Neilson of Doncaster.

On the same card two of Cleckheaton’s juniors impressed with dominant performances.

Kristin Gray overcame Billy Allan of Dodworth, Barnsley with the judges making the decision in his favour.

Kabbeer Khan returned to the ring after his recent novice title success and produced another terrific display. His opponent, Josh Moore of the Raging Bull Club Leeds, was the favourite with the home crowd. But Khan quickly silenced the shouts by dominating the bout from the first bell to the last which earned him a unanimous judge’s decision.

The best of the Cleckheaton Academy’s young talent will be on display at the club’s next boxing dinner show at the Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford on Wednesday March 28. A few tickets remain for the dinner and table details are available from Keith Tate on 07979 030406. Tickets are also available at the door for just the boxing part of the show.
