Gary Sykes to face Liam Walsh in British title showdown

Dewsbury boxer Gary Sykes will finally get his shot for the vacant British super featherweight title when he meets Cromer’s Liam Walsh at the York Hall Bethnal Green.

The British Boxing Board of Control announced the fight this afternoon (Thursday) and the bout will take place on Saturday February 22.

Sykes was due to meet Stephen Smith next month but the Liverpool man vacated his title following a dispute with promoters.

Walsh is the reigning Commonwealth super featherweight holder and is unbeaten in 15 fights, while Sykes will travel to London early next year knowing victory will see him win the Lonsdale belt outright.

Ticket details for the show, which will be promoted by Frank Warren, will be announced in due course.
