THORNHILL boxer Michael Smith will be aiming for an early birthday present when he returns to the ring on a dinner show at the Pullman Lodge Hotel in Sunderland next Thursday.
Smith is set to meet Waddington journeyman Ryan Clark in the third fight of his professional career just two days before his 19th birthday.
Smith has taken the fight at short notice, which meant him curtailing his new year celebrations but he will be hoping the effort pays off by extending his unbeaten pro run.
Although Clark is only 21 years old he already has been involved in 26 bouts. He won one and drew two of his first four fights, he has lost the last 22.
Smith said: “I only found out about the fight a few days ago but I got straight back in the gym and was even in on New Year’s Day.
“Ryan Clark is regarded a tough journeyman, who is a better fighter than his record suggests but I’m not worried about him and it would be great if a could get another win to start the year.”
Smith began his career with a draw against Rick Boulter in October before recording a cracking victory over highly-rated mixed martial arts fighter Jason Ball in Doncaster last month.
