Birstall seal first away win at Hawks

Birstall Victoria earned their first away win of the season, with an excellent all round performance to beat Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks 54-0.

Victory leaves Victoria third in Yorkshire Men’s League Division One, four points behind leaders Mirfield Stags and three off second placed York Acorn.

Birstall’s defence was superbly led by Gavin Davis and Jonny Parrish, which allowed hooker Brendan Sheridan, scrum half Tony Aubrey and stand-off Ste Suddards to deliver a master class in attacking rugby.

Sheridan’s quick run form dummy half saw him send Suddards over for an early try before centre Braden Hunter collected Sheridan’s pass to score a second.

Hunter scored his second of the game after full-back Ashley Tomlinson returned a Sheffield high kick and linked well with Aubrey.

The first half scoring was completed by Sheridan racing over from dummy half to put the Vic 20-0 up.

Quick passing from Sheridan and Suddards saw Hunter break the Sheffield line to complete his hat-trick.

With strong running and great defence from forwards Davis, Richard Duffy, Matty Ginnelly and Lee Birkett, Sheffield were unable to gain good field position.

Sheridan added his second try after another run from dummy half, Tomlinson gathered a Suddards pass to race over and Aubrey capitalised on Hunter’s break to score.

Matthew Gowland supported Sheridan to add his name to the scorers and Parrish completed the rout after 80 minutes with a lovely dummy to cross at the corner.

Conversions were added by Hunter, Gowland (two) and Suddards (four).

Man-of-the-match Tomlinson was faultless playing his first game at full-back.

Mirfield Stags suffered only their second defeat of the season, going down 24-22 at Oulton Raiders.

The Stags remain top of the table but are now just a point clear of York Acorn having played a game more.

Birstall are a further three points back but have played a game more than the Stags.

Mirfield trailed 4-0 after 25 minutes and although Steve Mead came off the bench to score a try, the Stags went into half-time 10-6 behind.

Oulton held off a Stags fightback to edge victory and Mirfield face a crucial game away to rivals York Acorn this Saturday, when Birstall Vic travel to Beverley Braves aiming for a third straight league win (kick off 2.30pm).
