Bingham’s brace earns Boys victory

BATLEY Boys ground out an important victory to keep pressure on the leading sides in Pennine League Division One last Saturday.

Allerton may have only won one league game this season but the boggy pitch and the Christmas lay-off proved a leveller.

The Boys were never behind in the contest but Allerton kept them under pressure and Batley were left hanging on for a win which leaves them third in the first division.

The Boys are now eight points behind Upton and 10 adrift of leaders Methley but they have four games in hand on both and if they can keep winning it promises to be an interesting second half to the season.

With Upton and Methley both in cup action this Saturday, Batley can close the gap on the top two as they welcome Sharlston A to Halifax Road in the only first division game taking place (kick off 2pm).

Adam Bingham had a terrific game at Allerton as he scored the first and third tries for the visitors and landed three conversions despite the difficult kicking conditions.

Boys man-of-the-match was Gav Davies, closely followed by Bingham and Tom Dransfield.

Methley maintained their lead at the top, winning 40-22 at Birkenshaw, while Upton edged to a 16-14 win at Crigglestone.

n Wyke remain in contention to win promotion from Division Two following a 16-6 win at home to Underbank last Saturday.

Wyke lie fourth but are just two points behind second placed Illingworth and three adrift of leaders Emley Moor.

Wyke are in Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy action this Saturday when they entertain fourth division side Siddal.

n Shaw Cross Sharks overcame Wortley 48-12 and they are ninth in Division Three with four wins and a draw from their 11 matches.

The Sharks will be looking to capitalise on Dodworth’s lack of action when the sides meet at Leeds Road in the Bennett Trophy in what will be the visitors’ first game since December 1.

n Hanging Heaton thrashed Newsome Panthers A 44-0 as they moved to within a point of Division Five leaders Slaithwaite Saracens A, while they also have two games in hand.

Heaton are in Pennine Supplementary Cup action this weekend when they travel to King Cross Park A, who are languishing at the bottom of Division Six.
