Bingham holds nerve to land match winning goal

Batley trailed 4-0 at half-time but responded with a 55th minute Aran James try which Bingham goaled.

Albert regained the lead with a converted try but with time running out, Richard Moody carried three defenders over the line for the crucial equalising score and Bingham’s touchline goal won it.

Last season’s beaten finalists Thornhill Trojans recorded their first win of the season, defeating Embassy 40-6 on Humberside.

The game was over in the opening quarter when Thornhill built up a 20-0 lead thanks to tries from Jake Wilson (two), Chesanco James and Darrel Olpherts, with Andrew Bates landing two goals.

Early second half tries from Ryan Fenton and a second from Olpherts, plus another Bates goal, extended the lead before Embassy replied with a converted score.

Bates scored an unconverted try before Olpherts completed his hat-trick with a stunning 90 metre run, with Bates adding the goal.

Birkenshaw looked to be heading through when they led Norland 20-12 with 15 minutes left after tries from Chris Clough, Karl Robinson and Ross Gratton, together with four goals from MoM Gavin Mezals.

However, Norland fought back with three unanswered tries late on to seal a 34-20 victory and set up a third round tie at Dewsbury Moor, who were re-instated to the competition and recorded a crushing 68-6 win over Whinmoor Warriors.

Danny Wardman set the tone for the rout when he opened the scoring after just three minutes and he went on to finish with four tries, the latter following a 40 metre break.

In an excellent all-round display by the Moor, they added a further eight tries and 10 conversions.

William Brook crossed for a hat-trick, Aaron Hayward bagged a brace, with Phil Shotton and Anthony Boardman adding a try apiece.

Captain Andy Robinson had a good run out at centre as he scored a try, kicked 10 out of 12 conversions and set up both Hayward’s scores.

Peter Robinson also impressed with support coming from James Delaney, Wayne Wilson, Chris Mortimer, Matt Shaw and Phil Simpson.

Whinmoor never gave up and were rewarded with a consolation try just before the end through substitute Ashley Stephenson, which Ryan Clark converted.

Yorkshire Cup holders Hunslet Old Boys were knocked out, losing 28-20 at Keighley.
