Belles triumph at gala thanks to Stead’s save

Battyeford Belles Open Age ladies football team were successful in winning the recent Middleton Gala.

Battyeford sent two squads to contest the gala, with prestigious opponents including, Middleton Park, Huddersfield Town Ladies and Tingley Athletic Ladies among their opponents.

The Red team, led by captain Kirsty Pollard, finished second in their group games to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Belles Blue team, captained by Leanne Webster, ended the group stages with a 100 per cent win record and the two Battyeford teams met in the semis

A great performance and winning goal from Alex Womersley sent the Blues through to face Tingley Athletic in the final.

Tingley provided tough opposition as the game ended all square and went to penalties.

Webster slotted home her penalty and after Hannah Stead produced an excellent save to deny Tingley, Beth Winsor drove home her spot kick to secure victory.

Winning squad: Leanne Webster, Hannah Stead, Beth Winsor, Emily Kenworthy, Megan Kerr, Kate Hilly, Kelly Rushforth, Gemma Robshaw, Alex Womersley and Alice Bunch.
