Batley close on promotion – rain thwarts Liversedge hopes

BATLEY took a massive step towards clinching promotion from Central Yorkshire League Division One last Saturday with a four-wicket victory at Buttershaw St Pauls.

Leaders Carlton won by seven wickets at home to Oulton and have one game left while Batley are four points behind in second place but crucially have two games remaining.

Victory saw Batley pull six points clear of third-placed Moorlands, who had no game, and also end fourth-placed Buttershaw’s hopes of a top two finish.

Buttershaw slipped from 151-4 to be 183 all out. Huzaifah Patel struck without a run on the board before Ayez Seedat dismissed top scorer James Crossland (50).

Tariq Hussain removed Philip Ackroyd (32) before Paul Carroll (44) fell to Arman Hussain who took 3-67. Seedat returned to take four of the last five wickets and end with 5-10.

Mohammed Tahir (64) and Tauseeq Raza (25) gave the Batley reply a solid start with a stand of 60.

Kashif Talib then added 22 and despite Carroll claiming 4-39 Batley were guided to 186-6 in 42 overs by Mohammed Arshad with 35 not out.

Fifth-placed Liversedge saw their faint promotion hopes finally ended in frustrating circumstances at Wakefield Thornes A.

Both sides took two points in a drawn game as rain saw play end with Liversedge, batting first, on 220-9.

Second-bottom East Leeds won by five wickets at Methley A which meant bottom-club Ossett A were relegated after their five-wicket home defeat by eighth-placed East Ardsley.

The hosts closed on 184-9 before Ardsley sealed victory reaching 188-5.
