The game was evenly contested until Wells’ quickfire treble condemned Liversedge to a defeat which leaves them anxiously just a place above the Northern Counties East League Premier Division relegation zone.

The one plus for Sedge is that they held a nine-point lead over second-bottom Retford United going into Wednesday night’s match at Albion Sports.

Sedge fell behind early on in last Saturday’s match against Handsworth as Bruno Holden found Wells, who played the ball across to the unmarked Danny Buttle to open the scoring.

Liversedge got themselves back into the game after 30 minutes when Eli Hey’s brilliant cross was met by Joel Farrer, whose header hit the crossbar before bouncing into the goal to level the scores.

Hey forced Handsworth goalkeeper Andy Sneath into a save and Sam Dobbs tipped a Colin Marrison effort wide before half-time.

The game turned mid-way through the second half. Wells regained his side’s lead with a cool finish, his first goal for Handsworth.

Two minutes later, Buttle’s left footed cross was tapped home by Wells and it got even worse for Sedge when a simple long ball eluded the home side’s back line and Wells completed his hat-trick.

The bewildering three minutes left a disheartened Liversedge side unable to mount a solid fightback as they slipped to defeat.
