Letter: Legacy of destroying council housing

Given the government’s hostility to council house tenants and anyone claiming benefits, it is hardly surprising only a few people have bothered contacting Dewsbury’s Tory MP Simon Reevell regarding the Bedroom Tax (Reporter, April 26).

What this wealthy man fails to recognise is that most council tenants have not got the option of moving to smaller housing.

Both Tory and Labour governments have spent more than 30 years getting rid of council housing without replacing them.

Rent councils introduced to keep private landlords in check were abolished in 1988 under Margaret Thatcher’s government.

Moving council tenants into private accommodation will only serve to make private landlords richer and give the tenant less security.
