Youngsters enjoy exchange

SHAW Cross Sharks hosted two teams from France last week in their rugby league exchange that is now in its 42nd year.

The French players, aged between 14-17 from the Lot et Garronne region based in Villenueve sur Lot and Tonneins, enjoyed hospitality from local families and club members during their week-long visit.

They played two games at Doncaster Toll Bar before visiting the Mayor of Kirklees Andrew Palfreman for a civic reception at Huddersfield Town Hall, they also took in the Rugby League Heritage museum at the George Hotel and spent a fantastic day at Headingley watching the Leeds Rhinos train. They were also introduced to cricket at the indoor nets with Yorkshire CCC.

The week culminated with two games at Shaw Cross last Thursday followed by a farewell party in the clubhouse.

The group of 34 players and six leaders departed on Friday morning for their return journey and were waved off by the host families and club members.

The exchange has seen over 1,700 players make the trip during the past 42 years and the planning has already started for next year when the Sharks make the return journey to France.
