Yorkshire man behind Tour de Yorkshire jerseys

A young British company has designed the podium jerseys for the first ever Tour de Yorkshire and today unveiled the official event jersey for general sale.

Milltag, founded by Leeds-born Ed Cowburn and his business partner Pete Kelsey, have been creating designer cycling kit for five years. They have collaborated with a number of artists and teams, including Matrix Pro Cycling, the British professional women’s team which counts Laura Trott OBE among its riders. Milltag developed technical race wear for Matrix in their 2014 and 2015 seasons and as a result, the company has taken on a series of innovations to develop their professional level men’s and women’s cycling kit.

Laurent Lachaux from ASO said; “We were instantly impressed with Milltag’s design ideas and very quickly realised we had found a company with great passion for design and for cycling. The technical quality of the jerseys is excellent and as it is combined with a creative and fresh design we are delighted to unveil this jersey today”.

Milltag have designed and manufactured the four jerseys which will be awarded on the race podium, among them are the overall race leader, the King of the Mountain, the sprint/points jersey and these will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

The official event jersey is available for sale in men’s and women’s specific fit, and pre-orders are being taken now. The shirt is in the race’s signature blue colour with a yellow Y.

For those who want their jersey before the race begins, organisers are urging people to order the shirts which cost £55 from www.Yorkshire.com/shop before 23 April.

Ed Cowburn, designer of the jerseys, said: “Being a proud Yorkshireman, it’s a dream come true that we have been able to work with ASO and Welcome to Yorkshire on these jerseys for the first ever Tour de Yorkshire. We are an ambitious company with a strong desire to change the perception of cycle wear as lacking in style and character, so when the opportunity came up we knew this was our chance to show exactly what we can do. We took inspiration from the rich heritage of Yorkshire’s textile industry and used Welcome to Yorkshire’s iconic ‘Y’ logo to create a series of individual patterns for each of the winner’s jerseys which appear on the shoulders and pockets - you could say that we’ve woven Yorkshire into every jersey.”

Stage one of the new Tour de Yorkshire, on Friday 1 May, will start in Bridlington and finish in Scarborough. Stage two, on Saturday 2 May, will start in Selby and finish in York and stage three, on Sunday 3 May, will start in Wakefield and finish in Leeds.
