A family has celebrated the grand opening of their new Chinese restaurant after they transformed a derelict building.

After a successful first three weeks trading Jack and Chau Sang Lin threw an opening ceremony for the 100-seater Wok Ever Palace on Monday.

The pair forked out nearly half a million pounds to spruce up the former Park Fisheries in Cleckheaton building after bagging it at an auction before Christmas in 2014. The Dewsbury Road site been in a state of ruin on-and-off for nearly a decade.

Mr Lin, 35, said: “The event was very good, we had friends over from Scotland, Newcastle and Cardiff .”

The Mayor of Kirklees Paul Kane also turned out to congratulate Jack and Chau, 37. Mr Lin said: “He asked me how much I had spent on the building and said he was very pleased to see it transformed.

“I created 25 jobs for the local community, including for young people to give them a chance to work.

The West Yorkshire Chinese Community Association performed a Unicorn Dance involving Chinese firework crackers at the opening.

The couple have run the Wok Ever takeaway in Westfield Lane, Scholes, for about nine years. They have three children, Leon, Jayden and Krystal, aged three to eight.
