Wheels are turning on cycling campaign

Pupils’ bikes will be kept safe and secure at five Kirklees schools after youngsters completed cycling training.

The Mayor of Kirklees Coun Martyn Bolt opened the new cycle shelter at Thornhill J&I School last week - one of five in the area funded by the Congestion Performance Fund and Sustrans after pupils took part in Bikeability Cycle Training.

Shelters have also been installed at Norristhorpe J&I School, Roberttown CE (VC) J&I School, St Paulinus Catholic Primary School and Moorlands Primary in Huddersfield.

Headteacher at Thornhill J&I School, Michael Rowland, said: “We already run a ‘Scoot to School’ initiative and we are now looking forward to encouraging pupils to cycle to school rather than coming in cars”.

Coun Cathy Scott, cabinet member for streetscene and housing, said: “The shelters will help to encourage children to cycle to school and lead a healthy lifestyle by providing a storage solution for their bikes.”
