What anordeal forpoor Mia

Volunteers with Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue saved whippet lurcher Mia from almost certain death when they fetched her from the pound on Christmas Eve.

Yorkshire Rose co-founder Sue Tozer was horrified at the dog’s condition. But she and colleagues set her on the road to recovery. And she has now been given a new warm coat by Dewsbury store Pets at Home.

Mia is now being cared for by charity volunteer fosterers Harry and Kath Pearson at Thornhill where she put on 8lbs in weight in a week.

But the couple too were shocked when they saw her. “She was the worst we have ever seen,” said Kath, 64. “I didn’t think she could survive. Her legs just collapsed from under her. ”

Sue Tozer said Mia had been sent to the Bradford Pound as a stray. Generally, animals are put down unless rescued or claimed within seven days.

“Mia was a third of the right body weight and covered in dog bites,” said Sue.

“She had obviously been used as dog bait. She was at death’s door. To think what she has gone through is heartbreaking. I burst into tears when we got to the Pearsons’ home.”

The Pearsons have been fostering for about five years. Harry said: “Yorkshire Rose do a fantastic job. I am so glad we got involved.”

And they urge more people to volunteer as helpers or fosterers. The couple will look after Mia until a permanent home can be found.

Harry said: “She will make someone a wonderful pet, and we are determined to find a special person to take her.”
