West End cheer as pub lands top cider accolade

A popular public house in Gomersal has received recognition with an award from a top campaign group.

The West End has been voted as the Cider Pub of the Year.

The accolade was presented by the Heavy Woollen Campaign for Real Ale group (CAMRA).

In front of a crowded pub a short speech was made by CAMRA branch chairman Andy Kassube. The award was then made by the branch’s cider officer John Phillips to Janette and Andy English who have run the establishment for 14 years.

There are two real ciders available which are currently Weston’s Rosie Pig and Old Rosie.

These were served direct from the box until recently.

There are now two dedicated cider hand pumps as cider sales continue to grow.

The West End pub dates back to at least 1790 when there stables and letting rooms available according to a local census of the area.

A CAMRA spokesman said: “The success Andy and Janette has achieved is even more deserved considering that this was the first pub they have run. Their commitment and ideas have given them this deserved success.

“The pub was close to winning the award last year, but such is the quality of consistency of its ciders it finally managed to beat all of its competitors this year.

“This award comes on the back of them winning the Heavy Woollen Spring Pub of the Year Award 2015.

“The West End is an Enterprise pub serving four excellently kept real ales, which consist of Taylors Landlord, Sharps Doom Bar, Ossett Blonde and a regular changing guest beer.”
