MOTORISTS faced a nightmare commute this morning, with sub-zero temperatures and a spate of accidents and breakdowns bringing traffic to a standstill on two of Yorkshire's main routes.

On the A1(M) , there was queuing traffic for 13 miles and long delays at the M18, junction 35, because of an earlier broken down vehicle. All lanes have been re-opened, but travel time through the roundabout is over an hour.

There is also congestion on the southbound A1 to Wentbridge South.
