Wartime years to be recalled

wartime spirit will be rekindled at the Home Front Dance, a 1940s night at St Paulinus Church Hall later this month.

And memories of 1940s Dewsbury have been prompted by photographs sent to organisers, Cliff and Beverley Craven, by a Belgian man who spent five childhood years as an evacuee in the town.

Cliff said: “We had a wonderful e-mail from a gentleman called John Huwaert, from Ostend, who said he would like to have come to the dance but plans on coming to Dewsbury next year to revisit the places where he and his family were evacuated.

“We want the dance night to recreate the community spirit which existed in those days and maybe encourage young people to take an interest in those times.”

The dance will take place on Saturday, November 19, starting at 6.30pm, with entertainment provided by musical duo Paul and Natasha Harper.

People are encouraged to wear 1940s dress. Tickets are £5 (£4 concessions) from Cliff or Beverley on 01924 504182.
