Wartime party to remember 1914

Red House Museum in Gomersal which may start charging a £3.50 admission fee

The event will coincide with the exhibition Gomersal and the Great War, which starts its run at the museum on August 16.

After 1914, dances and tea parties were held to raise money to send items to troops, to help refugees and to raise morale on the home front.

Jacqueline Ryder, chairwoman of the Friends of Red House, said: “These two community group projects complement each other, and it is good news that the Mayor and Mayoress are coming to open both events.

“It is the Friends’ way of commemorating the early days of the First World War, when it was thought that the troops would all be home by Christmas, and life for many continued as before.”

Dance guests will have the chance to see a display of everyday items from the period on loan from the Old Silk Mill Antiques Centre and Café in Gomersal. The event will also feature live music.

The exhibition is currently at Gomersal Moravian Church, where it opened on August 3. All guests at the dance may view it in Red House for free.

The exhibition will be opened at 1.30pm and the tea dance will be held from 2pm-5pm. Tickets are £7.50 in advance and £10 on the door.
