Warning over swimming in construction site lake

Young people swimming in an unfinished lake are at serious risk of injury from concealed concrete plinths and steel bolts, Kirklees Council has warned.

Signs highlighting the dangers of swimming in the lake which is being constructed on the site of the ABLE project on the Spen Valley Greenway, Walkley Lane, Heckmondwike, are being ignored, said the council and the Green Business Network, which runs the project.

A spokeswoman said: “The unfinished state of the lake means that the risk of injury is even greater as hidden below the surface of the water are four concrete plinths with vertical steel fixing bolts.

“The council is worried that serious injury could be caused to people jumping or diving onto one of these plinths.

“The council is advising everyone not to take risks around water, and calling on parents and carers to discuss the dangers and hazards with their children.”

Police patrols were being increased in the area to keep people out, she added.
