Volunteers help dig biggest WWI re-enactment trench in England

BECOME ENTRENCHED Volunteers have begun work on a network of trenches in preparation for the Yorkshire Wartime Experience.

The event will include a re-living of the war’s battles by members of the Gordon Highlanders, five of whom came down from Scotland to make out the trenches in authentic historical detail.

And with WWI centenary commemorations a talking point this year, organiser Stuart Wright is confident the event will attract as many as 10,000 visitors.

“It’s a one-to-one complete recreation of a World War One trench. It’s currently the biggest in England,” he said.

“Every year we get veterans coming and we always do our utmost for them.”

The event will display five of the seven known WWI vehicles in the country and 14 original WWII tanks.

There will also be cavalry charges with horses.

Stuart said: “It’s an action-packed weekend for all the family.

“It’s an explosive day out – this show is only on once a year.”

The show takes place on July 5 and 6 in Hunsworth Lane, Hunsworth.
