Lucy Swift, of The Grove, Batley, said she feared the worst after her seven-month-old Pug, named Peaches, was pinched from her home.

The puppy was bought for her son Ellis Barrett after the brave six-year-old had a series of surgeries on scars he suffered from burns aged two.

He was released from his latest surgery at Pinderfields Hospital in February when she surprised him with the dog.

“We are all absolutely devastated and want her back,” Miss Swift said.

“Peaches is a big part of the family and we cannot believe anyone would take her.

“Ellis thinks the police know where she is but he is really worried about her. I could not bare telling him she might not come home.”

A neighbour captured the thieves on a CCTV camera pinching the dog from Miss Swift’s home between 1.20pm and 1.30pm last Sunday.

She watched the footage in horror as they let the puppy out of her garden before picking her up and running away.

Miss Swift said: “There were two lads in their early 20s. One was wearing a dark sweatshirt and woolly hat and the other a dark hoody.

“It is unusual to be wearing that when it has been so hot lately so someone must have noticed them.

“After they let Peaches out, she ran around a car and that is when they got her. It broke my heart watching it.”

She said police would be reviewing the footage this week.

PC Nick O’Meila said: “Enquiries are ongoing regarding this theft.

“We would like to speak with anyone who has information about Peaches whereabouts or who may have seen the persons who took her.
